Frameworx Process: Apply Route Optimization

Category: (4) eTOM Process Type

Process Identifier: 1.6.12.2.1

Original Process Identifier:

Maturity Level: 3

Description

Route Optimization are responsible to ensure, verify and track the efficient use of own infrastructure as offered to business parties as well as finding more cost efficient solutions or alternatives to handle traffic/services for own customers over various partners. (Least Cost Routing) Cost Optimization by way of Least Cost Routing

Extended Description

Route Optimization are responsible to ensure, verify and track the efficient use of own infrastructure as offered to business parties as well as finding more cost efficient solutions or alternatives to handle traffic/services for own customers over various partners. Route Optimization is the process of selecting from various alternatives path of outbound communications traffic based on cost , by analyzing the cost of each segment within such path. It is not unusual to see more than hundreds if not thousands of alternative paths and not necessarily the shortest technical route. Typically the main outbound traffic destinations are analyzed in terms of destination terminations. Two variants exists Pre-determined routing (traditional), Variant time routing which actively monitors network conditions and apply algorithms to adapt routing behavior based on Loss, Capacity utilization, quality etc.) LCR determines a cost efficient route algorithm for maximizing revenue for traffic based on charging/billing calculations (Time of the day, origin, destination, relative volume differences etc.). In short, the former parameters, are aspects central to revenue calculation. The outcome of this revenue maximization can be seen as triggering a policy change that is handed over to resource layer to adjust accordingly. In the absence of LCR optimization the resource layer will route according to technical efficiency which might be technically the shortest path, but often at a premium.
